How’s everything going? I am sure you must be swamped with trip planning and tour guiding these days. Keep me updated with your trip and I look forward to interesting stories during your journey.

I visited Morgan Stanley’s Bejing office yesterday and had a good conversation with Wei Christianson, China CEO of MS. Wei gave me a heads up about MS’ business and strategy in China and also provided suggestions for my summer internship and long-term career development.

Wei mentioned two points during our conversation which impressed me a lot. She first talked about why she has been working in this industry for over 10 years. It’s amazing to see that as MS’ China CEO, she has to work on average 14 hours everyday. The only thing she can control is to keep the weekend off and spend more time with her Husband and three children. She told me that even John Mack, CEO of MS, works at similiar intensity everyday. So what are motivations behind those successful bankers to work so hard? Wei said it’s passion. One can only thrive in an industry that he or she has passion for. If you consider career part of your life, you won’t feel tired working 15 hrs everyday. Even though you feel tired physically, you won’t feel tired psychologically. If you don’t have passion for what you are doing, you will feel tired both physically and psychologically. In that case, you might suffer a lot working long hours.

Another thing that impressed me was Wei’s enthusiasm about the Chinese market. She said she would give suggestion to a fresh MBA grad to start investment banking career in NY three years ago. But now, she would suggest going back to Asia immediately after graduation given the deal flow and opportunity here. Of course, she said spending 1-2 years at NY enables one to feel the headquarter culture and mature market environment which could not be experienced in China. But in the long run, those people with mainland background should definately come back to China. Doing business at a place where you could leverage all resources will surely increase possiblity of success.

Wei Christianson herself is a miracle in investment banking industry. She once left Morgan Stanley and followed her boss, John Mack, to join CSFB as MD. Later on, she was hired by Citigroup and took over the China CEO position after Margaret Ren stepped down due to a scandle. In 2005, when John Mack came back to MS and replaced Phil Purcell as new CEO of MS. Wei followed her former boss once again and came back to the firm to replace Jonathan Zhu’s position. From her story, we can tell how important it is to follow a right person throughout the career life.
