The Shanghai Luwan Master Plan by SOM will guide the redevelopment and revitalization of a 52-hectare area in the center of Shanghai. This concept is based on the district development pattern instead of a corridor pattern which is the prevailing pattern in most Chinese cities. The 1.6 million sm development will consist of an Historic Preservation District for tourist and cultural uses. Other uses include high density local relocation housing, expatriate housing, community services, retail entertainment centers, corporate headquarters, and office buildings.
The redevelopment will create a modern international community based on the traditional Shanghaiese style that has characterized the area historically. Its planning combines the best of Chinese urban traditions with proven models of successful international development.
The entertainment component of the Shanghai Luwan Taipingquiao Area Specific Plan, the redevelopment of this famous entertainment district, Daishijie (Great World) on Shanghai’s Xizang Street within the City’s historic Luwan District, will create a new, two-block long entertainment center that combines theater (Shanghai Opera), night clubs, restaurants, a cineplex, and an urban theme park — components designed to provide attractions for every age group.
