China-made solar module prices drop in US market

The price of China-made solar modules in the US has dropped about 10% since the US announcement of the preliminary result of the anti-dumping investigation.
According to industry sources, the price of China-made solar modules has dropped from US$0.9/watt to about US$0.8/watt since the announcement made in mid May. This means it is unlikely for Taiwan-based solar cell makers to increase quotes for China-based customers successfully, said industry sources.
The anti-dumping duties levied on China-made solar cells have been seen as irrelevant since most China-based solar firms are strongest in producing and selling solar modules. Hence the effects of the duties on the US market are believed by some to be limited.
Industry sources indicated that the problems with the US solar market are difficulties in obtaining funds for projects and relatively higher complexity in project designing. These problems have been limiting demand of solar PV system projects in the US.
The 10% price drop of China-made solar modules in the US may be caused by distributors clearing out inventories, said industry sources.
Simon Tsuo, chairman of Taiwan-based solar cell maker Motech, has previously indicated that the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations in the US are unlikely to cause significant price differences between Taiwan- and China-made solar cells because the US market demand in 2012 has been expected at 3GW, which is relatively small compared to global demand of 30GW.
While the price of tier-one brands of China-made solar modules in the US is currently around US$0.8/watt, the price of the same products in Europe has dropped fast to about US$0.7/watt. It shows that China makers have been more eager to sell their products in Europe, heating up the price competition there.
