Might as well give an idea of what “vanity” we are talking about here. Vanity, one prime example of the sin of Pride, is the excessive belief in one's own abilities or attractiveness to others. It is the same vanity of being too confident on either getting oneself out of a thing, or pushing oneself towards it. Being pushed (by others) is another story, although it could probably still be traced back to the sin of pride or a lack of pride. After all, it is all about balance.
