Went to a concert in weekend, this Schubert’s Der Lindernbaum was on the program. I was in middle school when I first time heard this song. I felt the melody was wonderful but didn’t pay too much attention to the lyric at that time. Might be I was too young to understand the deep meaning of Muller’s poem then. Now when I hear the song again, all of sudden, I realized that Muller’s poem is as great as Schubert’s music. Not very satisfied the Chinese translation so far, I will make more changes later. – Glider
A photograph of the replacement tree planted in 1912 for the original of der Lindenbaum, which had stood for over 600 years at Bad Sooden-Allendorf an der Werra, near Hessen, Germany.
At wellside, past the ramparts,
there stands a linden tree.
When sleeping in its shadow;
sweet dreams it sent to me.
And in its bark I chiseled
my messages of love:
My pleasures and my sorrows
were welcomed from above.
Today I had to pass it,
well in the depth of night -
and still, in all the darkness,
my eyes closed to its sight.
Its branches bent and rustled,
like calling out to me:
Come here, come here, companion,
your haven I shall be!
The icy winds were blowing,
straight in my face they ground.
The hat tore off my forehead.
I did not turn around.
Away I walked for hours
whence stands the linden tree,
and still I hear it whisp’ring:
You’d find your peace with me!
