pop culture will not last simply because it is pop. any thing that is pop fulls into fashionable and trendy. well fashion and trends change with times as the values and aethetic part of it goes with the changing times.
if you are a punk, you do not really apprecaite country music which tells about the simply and traditional life styles and the values in it, and it tells the story straight.
if you have the rage, you express through rocks
if you are one of those growing up around the certain type of styles, you tune in to classical music, you go to ballet, both are particularly confined to certain specific rules.
then there is always a broadway too. may appear to be shallow to some, but it is really challenging on the performance side as it involves multi talents and multi trainings.
now, if you are pop singer and you made you first million cd.s, you won't really last that long. kids today refer to the pop music of two years ago as classical!
so if you know what you are after, you go with the type of your own, while you try to have a broader coverage. but afterall, you are what you are and it may not help much even after a lot of efforts trying to appeal to different kinds. and this is just today's culture and thus art of the 21st century. you just cannot make everyone happy.
elite is for a hanful who share the same tastes because the values confined them through generations
the pop reach out to mass but will be short life because the mass change too
i am not sure this makes sense to everyone but i know it does to me at least for now
