If you have the burning desire to study broad, just go for it, it is better late than never. Don’t wait any further; the opportunity cost is higher the longer you wait. As to the age, getting an MBA at 31 is not too old; the average age for MBA graduates from most top 10 programs was around 29.
Before moving forward, let’s take one step back. Why did you want to study abroad? Getting an advanced degree or different experience are not good enough reasons, what do you want to accomplish through studying abroad? Can you achieve the goal by studying abroad? Do you have other ways to achieve the goal?
It sounded like you wanted to get an MBA from a top B-school in the US and land a dream job after graduation. It might not be the best option for you:
- Getting into a top 10 B-school in the U.S. is not easy. Even if you have superior academic record, including almost perfect GMAT and TOEFL scores (which are normal for Chinese candidates), most top MBA programs won’t appreciate your experience too much. They probably would rather admit a Chinese candidate with 2 years experience with a famous foreign bank/ consulting firm / auditing firm. But you can still give a try.
- If you’re lucky to get into your dream school, life is not easy there. You will have to compete with your classmates, and students from other top programs for a dream job. Mostly likely, you won’t compete with native Americans, but will compete with other Chinese students for an opening. It is not 1990 now, back then, not too many Chinese students were in the top programs. There are too many Chinese students with impressive credentials out there. A lot of them went to colleges or graduate schools in the U.S. and have great working experience. What advantages do you have? Business is all about communications, how comfortable are you with your English communication skills? Getting into a top program doesn’t guarantee you a dream job, or even a good job, most people only know the successful stories, too many unsuccessful stories die in the dark.
- If you can’t get into a top 10 program (or maybe top 20) in the U.S., you are better off going to a top 3 MBA program in China, especially if you plan to work in China.
There are many other options out there; you can get other advanced degree from other place, as long as you can achieve the goal. The information is for you to make an informed decision, if you still think it is worth trying, just go for it. Even if you fail, you won’t regret that you didn’t try.
