My boss sent me to an executive development and training class recently, the instructor made a very good point: in the business world, there is no reality, it is all about perceptions. I think the story might be stimulating for some people who want to climb up the corporate ladder in an American firm, or doing business with Americans.
During the training session on public speaking, a colleague asked a question, “I always feel very confident when I talk in front of the audience, but I got feedback I didn’t look confident, why?” Of course, my colleague might be a bit over-confident, like a lot of Americans, but it is true, sometimes, people don’t see you as you think you are. The instructor goes, the purpose of his training is to make us LOOK confident, but NOT BE confident; because in the business world, there is no reality, it is all about perceptions. When people describe what they see, they in effect describe their perceptions. Believe or not, after the coach fine-tuned the colleague’s body language, he did look more confident to us even though he felt awkward. No wonder many executives and politicians hire image coaches.
A Chinese friend complained to me, how mediocre his American / Indian colleagues are, but they got the promotions and better career opportunities, but not him. They only know how to bullshit, how to take credits; my friend has contributed so much but was not recognized. Assuming there is no serious discrimination issue, I think the problem is my friend didn’t know how to shape his boss’ perceptions. How you dress, how you talk, how you present, and how you behave in various occasions determine how people see you in the business world. Unlike in the school years back in China, your scores in the exams and awards from the competitions determine how good you are, it is a different game played by different rules!
Communication has been an issue for many Chinese struggling in the American corporate jungles, especially many Chinese guys with science background. They are definitely smart, if not super-smart, but they lack good communication skills. Back in their school years in China, people didn’t value communication skills, and they didn't have such trainings. In the finance world in the U.S., you can see many successful Chinese on the trading floor of a bulge bracket bank or a big hedge fund (communication skill is not important for a trader), but very few on the origination side/marketing side.
