The Carlyle Group is not an investment bank at all; it is a prestigious private equity firm, it is not as high profile as those bulge bracket investment banks, such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, etc. However, moving into a prestigious private equity firm is the next step for many investment bankers from top investment banks.
Comparing a private equity firm with an investment bank is like comparing an apple to an orange. Key difference between a private equity firm and a full service investment bank:
- A private equity firm invests in companies directly, takes equity ownership, directs the day-to-day operations, with the goal to eventually exit from the investments and reap the profits.
- A full service investment bank mainly provides financial services to corporate clients including M&A, equity offering, bond offering, trading, research, etc. In another word, it makes money by helping the corporations to raise capital in the market, instead of investing its own money. It might have an investments division in charge of direct investments, acting as the private equity arm of the investment bank, but direct investment is not their major line of business.
