And
International Wisdom Day
According to the People’s Daily, Hong Kong’s Wen Wei Po, ZhangjiagangDaily News, and other media reports, the Chinese Wisdom Project ResearchSociety, together with the Zhangjiagang City Association of Social Sciences,and the Zhangjiagang City Association of Education, jointly organised thehosting (in Zhangjiagang City, Jiangsu province) of the fifth session of theChinese Wisdom Studies Symposium and the third session of the ChineseScientific Thinking Symposium held on the 29th of November2013. At this meeting, Dr ZhangQingsong, of the USA – China Wisdom Research Society, announced the‘Zhangjiagang Wisdom Studies Declaration’ and explained its meaning.
Conference representatives unanimously agreed with the‘Zhangjiagang Wisdom Studies Declaration’, and expressed their support for theestablishment of ‘International Wisdom Day’, which they hoped would develop thesubject of Wisdom Studies to a global level. The Deputy Director of Zhangjiagang City’s Education Bureau and VicePresident of the Academic Institute – Mr Chen Guo Hua – stated that afterevaluating the conference, the declaration of the ‘Zhangjiagang Wisdom StudiesDeclaration’ was one of three major highlights (the other two bright spots werefrom the report of the President - Gu Ming Yuan – and his assessment ofpractical teaching and demonstration events).
The International Wisdom Society officially at this timeformally announced the ‘Zhangjiagang Wisdom Studies Declaration’ with the hopethat it will be an included subject in the annual symposiums involving wisdomstudy research, so that everyone may benefit from its theme.
This time marks the publication of a consensus thatrecognises the importance of the study (and development) of the theory wisdomresearch. An important recognition thatwill see the subject of wisdom studies advance and gain a greater depth ofunderstanding.

Zhangjiagang Wisdom Studies Declaration（2013）
On the 29th of November 2013, a group of ChineseWisdom Researchers met for two days during the fifth session of the ChineseWisdom Studies Symposium and the third session of the Chinese ScientificThinking Symposium, held in the city of Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province. After reviewing the international anddomestic development of Wisdom Studies over the last decade, the participantsreached a fundamental consensus. The consensusis hereby published as the ‘Zhangjiagang Wisdom Studies Declaration.’
In the 21st century, with the ever deepeningprocess of globalisation and the development of information technology, humansociety is facing new and challenging problems. Due to the unprecedented complexity of these problems, a superior (andoutstanding) wisdom is required. However, as the development of information is at its height, knowledgecan be retrieved at anytime. The rapiddevelopment of science and technology has led to unprecedented material growth,and this inturn has led to an accelerated rate of development of education inmodern society. There is now an urgentneed to develop the subject of Wisdom Studies so that society can benefit fullyfrom its presence.
In recent years, knowledgeable people, both inside China andabroad, have started paying attention to this issue, and have begun to promoteawareness of the emerging academic discipline of Wisdom Studies. In the United States, first there was thefamous Psychologist Robert J. Steinberg who led a group of scholars in aspontaneous research programme in Wisdom Studies. Following this, there was the development ofWisdom Studies carried out at the University of Chicago. In Europe there is the ‘Berlin WisdomParadigm’ which has a group of Wisdom Study researchers. In China during the last 50 years of the 20thcentury there was the famous educator Luo Jia Lun who considered the relationbetween wisdom, learning, and knowledge. He produced a penetrating analysis of the three inter-related subjects.
The famous scientist named Qian Xue Sen, (as far back as themid-1990’s), proposed a ‘Great Compendium of Wisdom Studies’ school ofthought. In the 21st century,the famous educator Gu Ming Yuan, the President of the Chinese Association ofEducation, developed the academic subject of Wisdom Studies. Within China there has been the developmentof the Chinese Wisdom Project Research Council, together with the emergence ofthe International Chinese Wisdom Society in Hong Kong, as well as theZhangjiagang City Wisdom Studies Project, and other similar academicinstitutes. As a consequence there havebeen a number of important academic conferences held, and many pioneeringpapers published on the subjects of wisdom, learning, and knowledge, which hasled to the development of a practical curriculum designed specifically forWisdom Studies. The academic brothersZhang Qing Lin and Zhang Qing Song are credited with designing and implementingthe first ‘Learning Wisdom in College’ courses, which have achieved manyimportant results.
However, whether in China or the United States of Americaand despite the fact that leaders in both countries clearly advocate thedevelopment of wise thinking amongst the people, it has to be acknowledged thatWisdom Studies (and the ability to ‘think’ wisely) is an acquired skill, andthat there must be appropriate planning if it is to be made socially acceptableand relevant to the masses. In thisregard, Wisdom Studies remains in its initial stage of development. However, the fact that there are now ‘WisdomCities’, ‘Wisdom Tourism’, and ‘Wisdom Study Schools’ serves to illustrate thesuccess of the project, and the willingness of people to embrace wisdom. In fact intelligence is the facility peopleuse when choosing their words and actions – and it can be said that WisdomStudies encourages the development of a clearer (and superior) thinkingprocess. Wise thinking can be used totackle the most difficult of problems with an innovation that is capable ofproducing new inventions. Amongst theworkers, the use of wise thought is the foundation of the generation of allproductive forces.
In order to promote and develop Wisdom Studies further, itis agreed that this ‘Zhangjiagang Wisdom Studies Declaration’ is a methoddesigned to arouse the attention of humanity to its cause and application. This statement also reaffirms the commitmentof Wisdom Studies Researchers already engaged in the task of developing thesubject with a relentless pursuit of the highest level of spiritual (i.e.psychological) developmental knowledge and wisdom, that is possible to attainthrough the cultivation of human civilisation. We hereby collectively support the ‘Zhangjiagang Wisdom StudiesDeclaration’, and agree to the establishment of an ‘International Wisdom DayPlan of Action.’ We call upon theinternational community to support the call for the establishment of an‘International Wisdom Day’ in a variety of ways. We are convinced that the establishment of an‘International Wisdom Day’ through various activities and methods will createthe conditions for the rapid development of the Wisdom Studies researchprogramme, and in so doing facilitate the development of human intelligence toa higher level. This will make the 21stcentury the century of the development of true wisdom, which will see theraising of the level of human consciousness across the globe!

Article (1): GeneralPlan
To facilitate, organise and plan for the development of theInternational Society of Wisdom on a global scale, with an emphasis upon thecompiling of guiding regulations.
Article (2):Definition of International Day of Wisdom
The International Wisdom Day is initiated and supported bythe International Society of Wisdom, the Chinese Wisdom Project ResearchCouncil, the Zhangjiagang City Association of Education, and the US Instituteof Chinese Wisdom Studies; all of which have launched a co-ordinated globaldevelopmental programme, part of which is the establishment of regular (yearly)conferences around the theme of creating global wisdom activities.
Article (3): Aims& objectives
The objectives of International Wisdom Day are;
a) Publicise and promote Wisdom Studies
b) Draw attention to Wisdom Studies
c) Generate respect for Wisdom Studies
d) Develop Wisdom Studies as an academic subject
e) Transmit Wisdom Studies to the next generation
f) Encourage thecultivation of Wisdom Studies
g) Apply Wisdom Studies and develop human intelligence to ahigher level,
Article (4): Date
International Wisdom Day will occur annually on the 5thof September.
Article (5):International Coordination
To organise worldwide action, the International WisdomSociety has initiated the development of the International Wisdom Day GlobalCoordination Committee. The Constitutionand Articles of Association of this Committee will be published separately. The International Wisdom Day GlobalCoordination Committee will initially be directly managed by the InternationalWisdom Society. It will be re-registeredas a separate legal entity when the time is right.
Article (6): Theme
Every year a new theme will be announced which will serve asthe direction of development for ‘International Wisdom Day’.
Article (7): ThemePublication
The new theme will be issued by the International WisdomSociety through the International Wisdom Day Global CoordinationCommittee. The new theme shall beannounced on the last day of September each year.
Article ( : Form ofActivity
International Wisdom Day is not limited to any form ofaction, and each region must adapt to the local prevailing conditions. Activities such as arranging lectures,courses, seminars, fairs, competitions, tours, and any other suitableendeavour, are encouraged.
Article (9): RegionalOrganisations
In each country or region, a local International Wisdom DayGlobal Coordination Committee Branch is to be established. Each International Wisdom Day GlobalCoordination Committee Branch member is responsible for local InternationalWisdom Day action. The relationshipbetween the International Wisdom Day Global Coordination Committee and itsbranches is one of cooperation and not subordination.
Article (10):Reporting System
Each Region Branch must issue a report on its yearlyactivities to the International Committee by the 5th ofOctober.
Article (11): AnnualReport
The annual report of the International Wisdom Society restsupon the reports received from the Regional Branches. The annual report summarises the WisdomStudies activities around the world, and is issued as the ‘Yearbook ofInternational Wisdom Day Activities.’
Article (12): Finance
Each registered Regional Branch is governed by localconditions (and regulations) and is self-financing.
Article (13):Regulation & Function
Global International Wisdom Day activities - as establishedby Regional Branches - must conform to the definition, research standards,methodology, and correct theme as defined by the International WisdomSociety. Regional Branches must clearlyrepresent the Aims & objectives of the International Wisdom Society to thehighest standards. If Regional Branchescontinuously violate this regulatory function, membership will be cancelled.
Article (14):International Activities
The International Wisdom Day Global Coordination Committeemay arrange and hold regular international events. This can include International Wisdom Forumsdesigned to gather information about global wisdom, and ascertain the correctdirection of development, etc.
Article (15): DateEffective From
This ordinance will come into effect on the 1stof January 2014.
Article (16): United Nations (UN)
The International Wisdom Society will request thatInternational Wisdom Day will be recognised by the United Nations as alegitimate world festival on the 5th of September each year. When this happens, International Wisdom Daywill be re-named ‘World Wisdom Day.’ This is agreed by the International Wisdom Society.
