China's Five Most In-Demand Careers Focus on Insurance, Analysis, Logistics
The five most in-demand positions in Beijing now command much higher salaries than the norm for local positions in China, and one of them, an experienced product manager, now commands an annual salary of 800,000 yuan (US$40,000) for a locally hired person, which would be a record. These premium wages are all being paid for people fluent in Chinese, as demand for expatriates who do not know Chinese is falling off.
Demand for product managers in China last year was for 350,000 persons. While China's local MBA programs produced 3,000 graduates annually, this was far short of the number needed. Demand for candidates with Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is especially strong, and demand for them in the coming years will only increase.
Foreign companies have had a hard time finding qualified country managers in China. The demand for individuals who are fluent in Chinese, have worked in China, and understand the Chinese political and business landscape and can deliver the goods when it comes to meeting business goals is particularly intense. The trend is towards hiring local management, not because of the high costs of expatriate management, but simply because expatriate management, generally speaking, do not have the language skills and background to function effectively in China. Current annual salaries offered to local country managers range from 300-500K yuan (US$36-60K).
The opening up of China's insurance industry has created especially high demand for Chinese actuarial analysts. This job requires a command of mathematics, statistics, investment and advanced statistical modeling techniques. In China, there are now only ten persons who meets international standards, and the number is expected to increase to only forty in the next few years. Annual salaries are expected to top one million yuan (US$120K).
One of the most popular careers in the next few years will be as insurance sales agents, and the number is expected to grow to 300,000 persons in the next 5-10 years. Even with this large number, it will fall short of what China's growing insurance market needs. Annual salary for insurance agents is now between 150-500K yuan (US$18-60K).
China's infrastructure development and distribution needs has created especially high demand for logistics chiefs and experts. Their annual salaries range from 300-500K yuan (US$36-60K).
