Rational XDE isn't a very good tool in generating working apps from model. Technically, a couple of other tools are a lot better and they're pitched as MDA (model driven architecture) tools. But none of them has received significant market responses so far. In my humble opinion, three things are hampering their popularity.
1. Steep learning curve, both in terms of rigorous UML discipline and a lot of MDA specific knowledge.
2. The tools are still relatively immature in generating industry strength apps, and aren't really able to deal with the dynamic/process aspects of model.
3. Resistance from programmers, who are concerned about their job security.
Granted, a powerful MDA development tool is an inspiring ideal. But unless you can address the three issues above, this ideal won't have much chance to succeed. Additionally, but equally importantly, the cost of developing & marketing such a tool could mount to tens of millions USD. I know this based on real experience. Are you prepared for investment of such scale?
