EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — China boasts more than 400 IC designs houses, but only a few have established themselves in the marketplace and many will struggle to survive, according to market researcher iSuppli Corp.
"Clearly, it's not possible for 400 IC design houses to survive," reported Byron Wu, an analyst from iSuppli. "Most of them are still struggling to survive or are burning through funding from the government or private investors."
Many of the IC design houses in China are "paper" companies with only five employees and less than $120,000 in total capital. "It is important to note that China lacks seasoned talent in IC design," he said. "Approximately 7,000 chip designers were employed in the country in 2003, yet 60 percent of them had no more than three years of working experience."
There are some exceptions to the rule, especially in consumer electronics. Zhuhai Action Co. Ltd. and Wuxi China Resources Semico Co. Ltd. were cited in the report as being "prominent" suppliers of high-volume, low-margin devices for use in MP3 players, USB storage sticks and other products.
Beijing Datang Microelectronics Co. Ltd. is supposedly the largest supplier of SIM card chips in China while Haier IC Design Co. Ltd. has made advances in set-top box devices, according to the report. And, Beijing Vimcro Microelectronics Co. Ltd. "beat Yamaha Corp. with its harmonic ICs used in large volume by a few local handset makers."
A tiny startup called BLX IC Design Corp. has persuaded a few of China's top consumer electronics manufacturers to use its 32-bit embedded processor. Next year, expect to see its chip technology used in set-top boxes, "smart" TVs, digital video recorders and thin-client PCs, Wu said.
However, there are more examples of failures in China. Many of the IC design outfits in China are too ambitious and attempt to design complex products like microprocessors and digital signal processors. "Most of them are forced to quit because of unexpected design challenges," Wu said.
iSuppli said two types of Chinese fabless companies are likely to survive. The first type are companies with founders from Silicon Valley and products that target overseas customers. The second are companies that shun reverse-engineering practices.
