---------------- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following the thread started by Jun Zeng(Startup founders, the most
important ...). I would like to add one more observation.

Startup founders, the most important bootstrap guideline: Survive

We all have read many articles of success stories of Google, Yahoo,
Microsoft, Baidu, etc. And when we tried our startups, we may set our
goals to become one of them, we may set goals to go IPOs someday or at
least be acquired with xxx millions. These are good goals, but do NOT
use these goals when you bootstrap your business.

When you bootstrap your business, the most important thing to remember
is: To SURVIVE.

When you make decisions,
Do NOT think about if the business will scale or not.
Do NOT think about the valuation of a business.

When you make decisions, you shall think:
Will this help me SURVIVE ?

I have seen a few friends with a few startups. They pulled together a
little bit of money (In multiple cases, around $200K), then tried to
build a "scaleable-high valuation" business. When money run out, the
venture disappeared. In retrospect, sometime, they avoided to do things
because they think the approach would not scale or that it would lead
to a low valuation business model.

When you bootstrap your business (assuming that you are not rich, not much money to waste or to try), my advices:

1. Start from small niche market.

Do NOT think there is any business idea with significant market
potential which have NOT been thought by other people or companies.

There is NO such idea !

Other people may decide NOT to get into the business for the reasons
you do NOT know, but idea must had been on other companyies' white
boards. This basically means that the only opportunities for you to
start is niche market.

(On the other hand, remember that Microsoft started for a niche application).

2. It is a very competitive market

There are lots of smart people in any field. And they are chasing
money as bravely (or greedily) as they can (at least as bravely as you
are).

You must be very good at what you are doing (otherwise, other people
will take your lunch money.)

3. Cash is king

When cash run out, the date of business will be counted.
Game may soon be over.

4. Take long term view

Do not be fooled by these get rich quick schema. (Ok, MySpace,
Facebook, YouTube, they all get rich in less than two years. but for
any of them, hundreds of copycats died). The chance that you become
one of these hundreds are hundred times bigger than alternatives.

5. Above not apply for a VC-funded startup.

If you got rich friends, or deep pocket uncles, or you get VC funding
Then above rule may not apply to you. (But for most of us, it is
difficult to get outside funding, and we need live on bootstrapping.)

Comments ? bricks ?
