New Zealand police hold grave fears for the mother of a toddler abandoned in Melbourne after revealing there was a history of domestic violence in the family.
Annie Xue, the mother of three-year-old Qian Xun Xue, has not been seen since September 10, six days before her husband Nai Xin Xue abandoned their daughter at Southern Cross railway station in Melbourne.
New Zealand police today cordoned off a house in the Auckland suburb of Mt Roskill, shrouding it in plastic sheets as they conducted forensic tests on the property.
A resident of the home was led away by police, but Network Ten reported the man was not a suspect and had not been arrested.
Police also were planning to forensically examine Mrs Xue's car which was found last night at Auckland International Airport.
Head of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Scott, said he was concerned for the safety of 27-year-old Mrs Xue, also known as Anan Liu.
"We are taking Anan's disappearance very seriously and we want to hear from her or find out where she is," Det Snr Sgt Scott told reporters in Auckland.
"We have grave concerns for her safety.
"There is nothing to suggest she has left New Zealand. At this stage we think she is in New Zealand."
He said police had found "items of interest" at the house.
Det Snr Sgt Scott also said the family was known to police.
"There has been a history of family violence that we've dealt with (with) this family over the last 12 months," he said.
It was also revealed today that Mr Xue had a daughter from a previous marriage who went missing in 2002.
In a documentary about the disappearance to be shown on New Zealand television, Mr Xue said he looked upon Qian Xun as "a second chance".
Qian Xun, who was dubbed Pumpkin by Melbourne authorities because of the brand of clothing she was wearing, and her father, 54, arrived in Melbourne from New Zealand last Thursday.
She was left at Southern Cross station on Saturday morning by Mr Xue who then went directly to Melbourne Airport and flew to Los Angeles.
An international search is now underway for Mr Xue, with Victoria Police working with Interpol and American authorities to locate him.
Mr Xue, a publisher and martial arts expert living in Auckland, was reported to be depressed and plagued by money problems.
New Zealand immigration spokeswoman Pansy Wong knew the couple and told ABC Radio that although they were proud parents, she believed their marriage was going through a "bad patch".
Ms Wong, a National MP, said she saw the couple at a function several months ago and they appeared to be proud parents.
"He (Mr Xue) was obviously a very proud father on that occasion, really sort of smitten by her," she said.
"And I just felt that both parents on that occasion when I saw them together, both of them just showed so much pride and affection towards her."
Victoria's Department of Human Services (DHS) said Qian Xun is bonding well with her foster parents and their children and had acquired a taste for vegemite on toast.
DHS spokesman Brendan Ryan said the foster parents' teenage children were treating the new arrival as a younger sister.
"She was distressed early in the week when she was asking for mummy but (the foster family) have done a cracking job in supporting her and comforting her," Mr Ryan said.
"She's sleeping okay, she's eating okay and she's quite fond of vegemite on toast."
Qian Xun will remain with the family for at least three weeks while the international search continues for her parents.
Mr Ryan said if her family members could not be found after that time, the department would seek an extension.
He said if family still could not be contacted after the extension expired, it would then be up to DHS and its New Zealand counterpart to decide if Qian Xun should be returned to Auckland.
