Swiss envoy says only 10 mln US dollars in Marcos Swiss fortune

Swiss Ambassador to the Philippines Lise Favre said Saturday that only 10 million US dollars remains in the alleged fortune collected by former president Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Imelda Marcos in the Swiss bank accounts.
Favre told a local news forum that the Swiss government is prepared to release the account after a case pending in a Philippine court is resolved.
"We are just waiting for a valid decision by the court that themoney is ill-gotten," she said, describing rumors of a Marcos fortune in Switzerland as "fantasy."
The Swiss government has already returned some 600 million US dollars plundered by the Marcos family from the country to the Philippine government, in the wake of 18 years of negotiations between the Philippine and Swiss governments.
The ambassador described the event as "historic" as it is the first time a sovereign government has returned "loot money" of anysort to another sovereign government in the history of humanity.
"The Marcos case helped us strengthen our legislation against money laundering. We are now at the forefront against money laundering and corruption," she said.
The ambassador admitted that her country has a bad reputation as safe haven of dirty money from around the world, but said this would change.
A Swiss banker, she said, must now know his customer and where his money comes from.
