Forecasting market volatility is extremely hard, at least at this point of time. Many in-house models claim they can, i am really not sure about this. If you can, it's too easy to make big bucks. I guess that's why few peole short options - which is a very risky game.
As to China secondary market, yes still lots of problems there. You are right that you must be ready for all you mentioned before. Again, depends on who you are.
