It is true that GCO probably has the lowest profitability among different offices, in fact it is said that Mck GCO has to dip into global bonus pool to pay its associates same bonus as other offices.
The main reason is that Mck GCO has to charge lower rate to Chinese companies, partially due to competition among M/B/B, partially due to the fact that Chinese companies haven't got used to pay hefty fees to consultants yet. In other words, Mck is nurturing GCO market for now. But things will change. In the long run Mck will improve its bottom line.
The long hour is a given in China among high-paid white-collars. In a land of $1300, what do you expect from a $100K job?
Having said that, joining Mck is surely one of the best way to back to China. The name of Mck still carries certain weight, and can immersely enhance your resume among future employers. Not to mention the visibility to high level executives.
Of course, if going back is not your idea, then it makes no sense to endure all these long hours. But then again, if such is the idea, why bother to try in the first place?
