S Korea gets $1bn theme park
15/03/2006 14:35 PM
Seoul - Hollywood studio MGM unveiled plans here on Wednesday for a $1bn theme park that will bring RoboCop and the Pink Panther to South Korea's southern port city of Busan.
MGM signed a memorandum of understanding with Busan city and South Korean developer Glovit for its first theme park in Asia on around 1m² of land, officials announced at a joint press conference.
Under the terms of a licensing deal, MGM said it will supply its content and brand name but no investment to the 'MGM Studio Park'. Busan supplies the land and infrastructure while Glovit brings in the financing and development.
Glovit president Park Hoon said he was seeking around one trillion won to finance the park that would be completed and opened by 2011.
It will feature some 27 amusement park attractions as well as a hotel, restaurants and a film academy where visitors can produce their own movies, and an entertainment school for deeper study of the film business.
A Pink Panther play area for kids and a RoboCop section will be key features of the park that will form part of a tourism complex Busan is building in the eastern part of the city.
"The actual size and content of the theme park will be subject to further negotiations," Busan's city mayor Hur Nam-Sik said.
He said the South Korean city of four million people and the world's fifth largest container port would "spare no efforts" to ensure the success of the venture.
A new era
MGM executive vice president Travis Rutherford said the theme park would bring in a whole new era for the Korean entertainment and leisure time industry.
MGM said it had been looking for five years for a location for its first Asian theme park and chose South Korea because the country provided unique advantages.
MGM senior vice president George Wade said: "It is a fantastic market.
"We studied so many markets in Asia. We wanted our product to go into a market that truly appreciated movies. As well as that, South Korea has good economic growth, disposable income and the government is very motivated to expand tourism."
For the past 10 years Busan, 450km southeast of Seoul, has hosted Asia's biggest annual film festival while South Korea has its own vibrant film industry.
The country is also the cradle of a Korean wave of TV dramas, movies and pop music that has enchanted China, Japan and other Asian nations.
"We are proud to be joining forces with the emerging leader of Asian popular culture, Korea, whose companies and stars are increasingly defining what people listen to, watch and play throughout the world," said Rutherford.
Glovit said it expected five million visits annually from domestic and foreign tourists, making the park the most popular in Asia.
