Based on my own experience, I think you need to know your partners well (at least working together for 2-3 years and through the ups and downs) before it's worthwhile to start a company with them. Most people just talk and want to get a free ride, and avoid hard and dirty work when the time comes to get the job done. I only had one worthwhile partner (who I had some fun intellectually) in the past 8 years.
I would say a team should have at most 2 equal partners on the top having dictatorial powers (preferrably one if ever possible), also the shares need to be distributed gradually based on achieving major milestonnes. People who do nothing after starting the company should have their shares diluted accordingly. Hastily created team tend to dissolve quicker.
I don't know of any company doing well with too many founders at the beginning. Microsoft 2, Dell 1, Yahoo 2, ebay 1, cisco (2 then got taken over by professional mgmt), Intel 4, etc.
Wants to hear more operational experience from people on the field
