Among S&P 500 firms, around 25% of their profit in 2006 came from the financial service sector. Many years ago when US was still a normal manufacturing economy, that sector accounted for only 5%.

2007 was the peak for all finance firms. Starting from then, it will be downhill road for many years.

Madoff was just the last straw.
