I'm not a MBA, so my thought may be different from yours.
1. I totally agree that the ability to live indepently will be improved. You actually learns how to push your way through the mess.
2. If you finish your PhD in USA (especially in top schools), you are likely to build some relationship. I believe it's actually easier for science PhDs to build relationship than MBAs, even in Wall Street.
3. Knowledge. I'm not talking about cheap works such as website development or database management, they have no advantage at all. I'm talking those happening in national labs and research labs in wall street financial companies.
If in the past years Haiguis succeeded by introducing fast&cheap techs, in the future years those intellectual productions that's more personal and can't be replaced by mass production will be more and more important.
