Universal Studios Has Beijing Hopes (2002-10-25)

A source with the State-owned Capital Tourism Group revealed they have inked an agreement with US-based Universal Studios in hopes of building a US$900 million theme park in suburban Beijing just before the 2008 Olympic Games.
The initial agreement for the proposed 300-hectare park was signed last month and is open to domestic and overseas investors.
An official with the group, who would not give his name, said yesterday that they are waiting for approval from the government and are seeking more partners. The source did not elaborate on the detailed clauses of the agreement which he said are still under negotiation.
The company is currently conducting feasibility research on Beijing's Shijingshan District and Majuqiao in Tongzhou District, but added that Universal preferred Yanjiao in Beijing's Tongzhou District.
Insiders said that to open before 2008, construction of this proposed project must begin by the end of next year.
The unnamed official said that Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa Limited is very interested in the park but no agreement has been reached yet.
Last Thursday, Hutchison Whampoa (China) Limited, the Capital Tourism Group and Beijing Enterprises Holding Ltd established the Beijing Tourism Co Ltd, with the three sides holding 27.5 per cent, 32.5 per cent and 40 per cent of the joint venture respectively.
The new company will focus on the development of tourism projects for the 2008 Olympic Games and strive to list in Hong Kong.
Some analysts have said that Hutchison Whampoa may participate in the theme park using the new joint venture.
Universal Studios boasts two theme parks in the United States and also recently signed a co-operation memorandum with Shanghai.
