mostly very short in length, but like very high quality wine...
either he was more phylosophical to me than the french guy,
or his phylosophy was much closer to mine.
i never recognize any authorities and have been a rebel all my life (still paying for it) but this henrich boll guy, darn it, was so great. i think you will not regret once read any of his works.
i only remember one very short one that i read when i was still in high school i think. this is the one i kep telling people of all cultural background (some german did not even know about boll) to share with
it went like this as a story, very simple, no fancy development, straight forward but you think about it, it said a lot...
one morning, a photographer went to take pix at a harbor outside humbeg.
he jumped in between rolls of empty fishing boats to take the sun rise scene from best angle as he saw fit.
then he realized he was step on a boat where there was still someone sleeping there. he appologized for the rude wake up
and the fisherman shrugged it off.
then the guy could not control his curiocity so he asked straight:
excuse me sir, why aren't you fishing out there like the other fisherman at the good fishing time like this?
the fisherman was not interested in a conversation so simply asked back
why should i?
don't you want a bigger fishing boat?
yes, so?
so you go out get more fish!
and then?
then more fish would get you bigger boat, right?
year, what do i do with bigger boat?
well, you can catch even more fish with bigger boat, right?
yeah, so why would i want to catch all that much fish?!
because then you do not have to work hard any more, just lay back and relax....
really? what do you think i am doing right now?
the photographer thought first he was trying to teach the seemingly uneducated man a lesson as doing him a favor, now he just realized he just learnt a very valuable lesson:
after all the efforts, what the objective of his life could have been achieved a lot easier. it was simple, but hard to figure out as this fisherman already did....
well, what do you think? i was just telling you the story as i remembered, this was not his literature, i hope i did not reduced his shining value by too much!
