D70 and 18-200VR clearly have much better contrast and saturation. My guess is that the air in Beijing changed over the past five years, but it is really the betterment of the lens that makes the pictures look like more clear. Beyond the technical aspect of the pictures, the first set of pictures are better in terms of composition and much more interesting - more thougths into the pictures, from angles you were shooting, mood to be expressed, etc. Don't know whether you realized - the recent set has more pictures with close-up shots - probably has something to do with 18-200... when used properly, zoom helps greatly with composition, but it also makes you lazy by not moving around - no wonder that many legends only use 50mm. I have used many zoom but now only shoot with fixed focal lengths when serious - fast and better contrast. Also, landscape photography is very different from travel photos, which I am sure you know.
